PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
SEPTEMBER 2008
COMMUNITY SERVICE – THE
ROTARY ECLUB WAY
Rotary eClub One is a
full-service chartered Rotary Club in every
aspect of its management and activities,
except that we do not meet for a meal, and
our meetings operate 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week. On any day, visitors can select from
many meeting programs (articles) ranging
from Rotary information, case studies of
successful community and international
service projects, news about our club
activities, tips and hints for Rotary Clubs,
and a personal growth department for
Rotarians.
Rotary eClub One members are
actively engaged in Community Service,
International Service, Vocational Service
and Youth Service projects. In respect of
Community Service, each member must commit
to a minimum of 12 hours personal service
per calendar quarter. Interestingly, several
of our members exceed the minimum by many
hours each quarter, a tangible demonstration
of their commitment to our ideal of service.
For example two of the seven Australian members of the Club have elected
to support environmental projects. Past
President Chris Joscelyne commits his
community service time and provides
resources to a coral reef research station
supported by the Station Lizard Island Reef
Research Foundation and the Coral Reef and
Marine Science Foundation. These facilities
provide for coral reef research and
education located on the northern Great
Barrier Reef (north of Cairns, Queensland).
I commit time and resources as a Board
member of a national park/wildlife
foundation, and our new club member, PP
Chris’ wife, Katy, is the founding
coordinator for a volunteers program at the
Blacktown City animal holding facility in Sydney. These are but a few of the many
diverse projects undertaken by our members!
At the start of each Rotary year, we ask our Club members
to submit proposals for grant funding for
their projects, if this will add more value
to the programs in which they are engaged.
Whilst in September, grants are allocated
from the approved budget, members can apply
for specific grants after this time on the
understanding that funding is contingent on
funding availability. Overall, the Club is
proud that 20% of its annual budget is
committed to funding Community Service
projects.
Elizabeth Lewis, resident of Boulder, Colorado,
is our Director, Community Service and can
provide valued guidance to members
undertaking their community service
obligations.
