Youth on the Trail

In 1978, the United States Congress designated the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDT), also known as the “King of Trails”. This secured the future of the most scenic, wild and remote landscapes in America.

The vision for the CDT is a 3,100-mile primitive and challenging backcountry trail from Canada to Mexico along the backbone of America. Approximately 70% of the Trail is usable. However, many of those miles are in desperate need of repair, rerouting for sustainability, or removed from roads and motorized trails.

The Continental Divide Trail Alliance (CDTA) is a group of dedicated conservation-minded outdoor enthusiasts, committed to seeing the Continental Divide Trail through to its full completion, to its last charted mile, and to the continued care of this great natural wonder for future generations.

The CDTA Youth Corps is a program of the Continental Divide Trail Alliance, managed in partnership with Rocky Mountain Youth Corps and Southwest Conservation Corps.

Young volunteers aged 17-25 build new trail sections and assist in the completion of the Trail. Participants include Crew Leaders, Conservation Corps Mentors, and Corps Members. The trail work is tough and challenging, but the rewards are immense and the experience is unforgettable.

CDTA Youth Corps is split into two distinct seasons – Spring in New Mexico and Summer in Colorado and Wyoming.

Participants receive necessary training to complete projects while living in primitive camping conditions. Training includes use of tools, trail building techniques, emergency procedures, independent and backcountry living skills, map and compass and leave-no-trace principles. Volunteers are shuttled to specific trail projects where they will spend anywhere from several days to several weeks. Trail work can include cutting in tread, installing erosion control devices, constructing rock walls, erecting fences, building bridges and putting up signs.

Extensive hiking and backpacking may be required to reach some projects. For at least nine of the ten weeks the young volunteer work on trail building or repair. In the final week, participants prepare a report on their activities and speak at Rotary clubs and other volanteer organizations to promote the work of the CDTA.

Rotary eClub One is a supporter of the CDTA Youth Corps and we have sponsored young people in the program.
