District’s Overseas Project Team helps in Kosovo
Rotarians in District 1290 (United
Kingdom) are helping post-war victims in Kosovo. The
Overseas Project Team is one of many groups who are fighting
the corner for Kosovo. This goes beyond providing medical
kit and other very important equipment. Training delivered
by professionals is part of the work and is helping
communities to rebuild themselves.
No
one expects to suffer illness or injury that affects their
mobility, their independence or dignity. Unfortunately in
Kosovo it happens to hundreds of people each year. Landmines
claim lives and maim youngsters, patients require
wheelchairs after suffering strokes and giving birth can be
a harrowing experience.
It was a heart-breaking
visit in 1999 by three members from the
Rotary Club of Launceston
which prompted the formation of
OPT. Co-ordinator Barry Kressinger and fellow members saw
for themselves the serious and painful suffering of local
people.
Barry says the visit left a lasting
impression: “It was quickly apparent there was a lot of work
to do and it was going to take more than one Rotary club to
achieve it. The idea of a district team was formed and now,
ten years on, volunteers regularly visit Kosovo with more
equipment and the expertise to help communities to help
themselves.
“It’s thanks to a strong relationship
with the public and the Cornwall Fire & Rescue, the efforts
of OPT are able to continue. Donations include fire engines,
hose reels, ladders and time as fire fighters often come
with us on the 2000 mile trip to ensure the kit is used
properly. Ambulances are also donated, complete with patient
trolleys and wheelchairs. There is a four wheeled drive
ambulance and an all terrain fire engine ready to be sent to
Albania.”
